Tangle Lakes
This week I'll be going to Tangle Lakes to survey for archaeological material. On the linked map you can see the large lake called Round Tangle Lake. Just to the northwest of there is a visible ridge. BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is making a trail that will go from Round Tangle Lake up to that ridge. The ridge happens to be in state land so my coworker Richard and I will be surveying there. There is a possibility of artifacts being found that are around 4 - 6,000 years old.
On the way up to Tangle Lakes, we'll also be making a side trip to Quartz Lake. Just south of the lake is a parking lot, and just south of there some campgrounds will be going in. We will be surveying that area for archaeological materials. That shouldn't take more than a day.
After we survey Tangle Lakes, on the way back to Anchorage we will be looking at a small plot of land in Copper Center. It's a small lot that the state is selling, and in order to be in compliance with federal law, we must survey that area making sure there is an understanding of what archaeological materials might be on that land. This survey is only over 2 acres so it shouldn't take more than a weekend.
I'll be gone from Monday through Friday. It should be a fun trip. I'm all packed and ready to go. My per diem wages for food that I will receive after the trip will be $60/day. I bought all my food for the week at Fred Meyer and left paying about $62.
I'll be getting 5 days of per diem when this is all worked out. That's 240 extra dollars that I'll have in my pocket. Sometimes it's good that food is so expensive out in the bush. At least for people like me who can benefit from low(er) prices in town but get paid for the cost of living out of town.
Everything about this trip should be good.
